9/23-27/12 Sunday afternoon we drove to Bakersfield south taking 198 to Exeter CA & going south on 65 at an unhurried pace. Traffic was light & the day was beautiful-"It never rains in California"--you know the song--it's true :^)
We had a lovely visit, getting to know each other really for the first time as adults. We found that we enjoyed each other very much. Monday we went to CALM California Living Museum north of where they lived. The outside museum held animails that had been injured & could not return to the wild. Mountain lions, bobcats, skunks, night herons, golden eagle & bald eagle, reptiles & snakes-mostly rattlers, and even a legless lizard (??I wondered what makes it a lizard & not a snake?-I will let you know when I find out!) It was fascinating to see them all and have the time to meander unhurried through the paths. We sat at the dinner table that night chatting after dinner til 1 of us realized it was 10 pm. Tuesday was mostly a work day for Peter, but we went shopping at Vallarta a local supermarket specializing in Mexican food-We had lunch there-Peter's plate of chicken was so large that it fed both of us our first night back on the road! When we walked out there was a van in the parking lot that the store used to bring people home after they had shopped! Ingenious idea. Jenny said that they will often also pick people up to bring them to the store. Grocery shopping is a wonderful social experience-I'd never really thought of it that way.
Our last morning we went to see the San Andreas Fault (wonder why they call it a fault-it's just they earth stretching-growing-no fault there. It was quite a ride! Longer than anyone expected. Fields of oil wells on the way out and fields of orchards on the way back.
